It was mentioned in the google discussion that the "islam is" was possibly removed to avoid angering people. Even if that is not the case, we've seen often in current events moments of self censorship on the topic of Islam (for example, the book the Jewel of Medina or the Dutch Muhammod cartoons). What is the significance of this?

The answer seems quite simple to me. It's about self-preservation. Yes yes I know it's great to uphold the ideals of freedom of speech and freedom the press, but sometimes you need to pick your battles. Specifically, pick battles that you can reasonably expect to win. Avoid battles that will lead in your grisly demise.
yah, i think unfortunately people still get really passionate in their feelings for and against islam because for awhile they were accepted and condoned (after 9/11) and they are just used to repeating those positions. So why encourage these battles I suppose when you're just trying to provide a search.
